Almost all of us have seen family pictures where there may be a halo, aura or even an image of a person. The quality of the ‘energy‘ in the photo may vary but we’ve all seen something that made us look twice. In this list are images that will make you look more than a few times.
These are some of the best and most famous spirit photos ever taken. It is said that when a person dies, sometimes their soul remains attached attached to this world if they are unable to let go of something emotionally. If they have unfinished business with someone, they may stick around for a bit in spirit form until they can accept and let go of their anger. The spirit that remains attached to situations, locations, or objects is what we would refer to as being a “ghost”.
People often laugh when they hear the word “ghost” because of how much it has been glamorized and commercialized. And let’s be honest, there are tons of fake ghost stories out there. But if even just one is actually real out of the tens of thousands that exist, then this is no longer something we can scoff at. Why can’t souls hang out for a while after their physical body dies?
Even Dr. Michael Shermer, found of Skeptic magazine and a person who makes a living debunking paranormal stories, has recently had his skepticism completely shook to the core after a paranormal experience he had. He believes the soul of his wife’s grandfather played her favourite song on the night of their honeymoon from a radio that had been rusted over and inoperable for decades. She interpreted this to be his way of telling her he approved. Michael gave the details of the story and his recent reconsideration of the paranormal in an article published in Scientific American.
The point is, ghost stories are nothing to laugh at. The are experienced every day by some of the most credible people. As for the images below, I can’t speak to the authenticity of the images. I did not take the photos. I am not in the pictures. And I’m not a ghost photobombing in the background. But let’s explore this with an open mind.
Here are the best ghost and spirit photobombs ever taken, in no particular order:
1) The Amityville Horror
It is the true story of the Lutz family, who went through a nightmarish twenty-eight days inside the house at 108 Ocean Ave in 1975 has become known world wide. The house had previously been the residence of the DeFeo family about a year or so before the Lutz’s moved in, that is until twenty-three year old Ronald DeFeo murdered both his parents in their beds as well as his four siblings: Dawn (eighteen years old), Marc (twelve) and John Matthew (Nine).
Since the Lutz’s fled the ‘Horror House’, the story of what occurred to the family in less then a month’s time in Long Island has been turned into a book, made into a movie and spawned the name of a famous fictional horror movie franchise called The Amityville Horror.
This a photo that appeared on a photo realm from a camera that was set to automatic. This photo was not discovered until 3 years after the events had occurred. The picture, which appears to be of a small boy with glasses or a man kneeling on the floor with glowing eyes, has been called everything from one of the dead DeFeo children to a demon, first turned up in the collection of photos George Lutz had from an investigation into the haunting in 1976, led by infamous Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.
It was the only ghost photo that appeared on the film. It remains the most credible ghost photo to date.
2 ) White Lady of Worstead Church

“It is said that the ghost is a healer who appears when someone near is in need of healing. When she visited the church at the time of the photo, Diane was in ill health and was taking antibiotics.”
3) The Pink Lady of Greencastle picture

The above photos are the remarkable result of a picture Guy took of one of the upstairs windows. The image of a vaporous pink ghostly woman is rather clear. Guy did not see the figure at the time he snapped the photo, but saw it only after the film was developed. An analysis of the film determined that the image is present on the film’s negative. The bottom right photo is a digital enhancement, which reveals a skull-like appearance for the ghost’s face.
4) Farm Ghost
“This amazing photo was taken by photographer and graphic designer Neil Sandbach in 2008. Neil was photographing some scenic shots at a farm Hertfordshire, England, as part of a project for wedding stationery…Neil had shown the couple the anomalous photo, and before the wedding they asked the staff at the farm if they had ever had any spooky experiences there. They did not mention Neil’s photo. Indeed, they admitted that the figure of a young boy, dressed in white night clothes, had been seen on several occasions around the barn.”
5) The Phantom Pilot
Old retired helicopter in Somerset, England. The woman in the picture said she felt cold, even though it was warm that day.
6) The Watcher
One posssibility is that this is a double exposure of a living person. In 1959, this image would have been captured on film. If not, this is a spirit.
7) Coventry Spectre
“I photographed my boyfriend in the hotel,” said Iovan. “Back home I was shocked to see another woman’s shadow in the picture. She looked like a priestess in long white clothes.”
8) Robert A Ferguson
“At first glance, this might seem to be a double exposure or some kind of darkroom trickery, but this photo is a Polaroid (one of several taken of Ferguson at the time), making any kind of hoaxing quite unlikely.”
9) Grandpa’s Ghost
Denise Russell: “The lady in the color photo is my granny,” she says. “She lived on her own until age 94, when her mind started to weaken and had to be moved to an assisted living home for her own safety. At the end of the first week, there was a picnic for the residents and their families. My mother and sister attended. My sister took two pictures that day, and this is one of them. It was taken on Sunday, 8/17/97, and we think the man behind her is my grandpa who passed away on Sunday, 8/14/84.

10) Specter of Newby Church
This photo was taken in 1963 by Reverend K. F. Lord at Newby Church in North Yorkshire, England. Pretty scary, eh?
11) Railroad Crossing Ghost
An odd legend about a railroad crossing just south of San Antonio, Texas. The intersection of roadway and railroad track, so the story goes, was the site of a tragic accident in which several school-aged children were killed – but their ghosts linger at the spot and will push idled cars across the tracks, even though the path is uphill.
12) The Back Seat Ghost
After visiting her mother’s grave, Mrs. Mabel Chinnery snapped a photo of her husband, only to discover an image of her mother.
13) Tulip Staircase Ghost
Rev. Ralph Hardy snapped this photo:
“Then I saw a woman glide across the balcony, and pass through the wall on the west balcony,” he said. “I couldn’t believe what I saw. I went very cold and the hair on my arms and my neck stood on end. We all dashed through to the Queen’s Presents Room and looked down towards the Queen’s Bedroom. Something passed through the ante-room and out through the wall. Then my colleagues all froze too. The lady was dressed in a white-grey colour crinoline type dress.”
14) The Brown Lady
The ghost of Lady Dorothy Townshend:
“Captain Provand took one photograph while I flashed the light. He was focusing for another exposure; I was standing by his side just behind the camera with the flashlight pistol in my hand, looking directly up the staircase. All at once I detected an ethereal veiled form coming slowly down the stairs. Rather excitedly, I called out sharply: ‘Quick, quick, there’s something.’ I pressed the trigger of the flashlight pistol. After the flash and on closing the shutter, Captain Provand removed the focusing cloth from his head and turning to me said: ‘What’s all the excitement about?’”
He saw her again a week later and described her as wearing a brown satin dress, her skin glowing with a pale luminescence. It also seemed to him that her eyes had been gouged out.
