How To Get “High” Without Drugs4 min read

Binaural Beats are the products of two different sounds in harmony; they produce sounds that are only heard by the brain. The effect of this can be quite calming, relaxing and meditative. There are many different types of binaural beats that can suit your specific mood and also help with various ailments. Many people have said that if you are someone who generally has trouble with quieting the mind and meditation (like me), then binaural beats are likely to have a greater affect on your overall ability to reach the higher frequency states. Furthermore, studies have shown that these beats can assist with mental clarity, more focused thought patterns, increased energy, heightened creativity and many more positive changes for your overall wellbeing.

Physicist Heinrich Wilhem Dove first discovered binaural beats in 1839. He published his findings in his book Repertorium der Physik. Through his research he found that when you present two different frequencies separately, one to each ear, your brain can detect the phase discrepancy between the two frequencies and it tries to reconcile that difference. Until 1973, little research was done on the affects of binaural beats and the brain until Gerald Oster, a biophysicist, presented a paper in The Scientific American. His paper sparked further interest and research into the study of binaural beats. He stated that:

“The measurement of binaural beats can explain the processes by which sounds are located — a crucial aspect of perception. It is possible that hormonally induced physiological behavior changes may be made apparent by measuring the binaural-beat spectrum”.

HOW TO USE BINAURAL BEATS

Now that we have learned about some of the benefits and history of binaural beats, it’s time we learned how to use them.

First off, I think that it is important to set your intention as to what you hope to achieve out of your experimentation with the beats. Are you looking to relieve stress or anxiety? Achieve more focused thought patterns? Clear your head and tune into your inner voice or higher self, or do you just want to try it out and see what comes of it? That is fine too, and will probably still provide some sort of benefit.

THE FINER DETAILS

It is important to note that you need to have a pair of stereo headphones, particularly good quality ones that can pick up low frequencies and sounds. Then you can get yourself into a comfortable position either sitting or laying down. If you are practicing during the day, it may be beneficial to use an eye mask as well. Then you can begin your binaural beats track, start off by focusing on your breathing, and breathe deeply. Listen to the sounds. If any thoughts come into your head, just don’t give any focus to them, and be conscious to not get angry or frustrated, just let them pass by.

You should make sure to pick a track that is AT LEAST 15 minutes long because the brain requires 7 minutes to fall in synch with the audio frequencies. Be patient with this practice, it can take a few tries before you start to reap the benefits or notice any changes at all in your mental states. Once you do, you may notice you can achieve states that can be similar to states people reach while on certain drugs. Perhaps this is where binaural beats got their nickname as “Digital Drugs.” These beats can certainly put you into very relaxed states and it is recommended that you don’t drive while listening for this exact purpose

I personally, have experienced states of complete euphoria and bliss, and feelings of ultimate connectedness to Source. If I had to compare it to a drug I would say that these beats could be similar to that of the effects I have experienced while taking psilocybin or “magic mushrooms.”  Of course these states can vary greatly between each person, so make sure to drop your expectations to certain outcomes. These states can ultimately be achieved with regular meditation as well. Be at peace with whatever experience you manifest for yourself at that time.

There are many different types of beats that claim to produce different types of effects, some you can buy, but there are a lot of beats that you can find for free via YouTube or other websites. There is also free software available that allows you to make your own. Check that out HERE. Find ones that best suit you and your intention.

I have been enjoying this one, and have yet to try too many others.
